I don't plan to be "preachy".

I just read where people are complaining that the cruise ships are still stopping in Port-au-Prince and the vacationers are shopping!

Hellooooooo, you inconsiderate persons, sitting in comfort someplace pontificating, turn off your computers; leave your clean smelling surroundings and go get a five dollar cup of coffee. Enjoy it as you meander along clean streets and probably head to your designer planned residences.

At this time, the world does not care about your selfishness.

The port and piers have been cleaned enough to allow the ships to dock.

Those disembarking, I'm sure are there to spend money, because that was a planned stop before the earthquake.

Only the Great Spirit knows how many shoppers are wealthy enough to give one-to-one donations of the shopkeepers they meet. The cruisers are there for a Mighty Purpose. We'll never know the comfort of a good word, or a purchase made, brings to the receiver.

The ingenious merchants along the port area have opened their shops for straw products, trinkets and whatever they may have left to sell.

These merchants can take their profits and be proud they earned it. I've never met a person who was proud to be in a situation to accept hand-outs.

In my Economics Class an eon ago, we were taught that an American dollar will turn seven times within our community before it moves out.

Whatever, their money unit may be, I'm sure the American dollar is the most welcome at this time.

So let 300 persons a day off the ship and if only $100 is spent by each, that is $30,000 more than the Haitians had the day before. Now if the rule holds that money times seven is $210,000 for ONE day.

Ships of various sizes will be stopping for some time to come and as the days go by, the people of Haiti will fare better.

Only time and the Great Spirit will be a healer of body, heart and soul.

There, but for the Grace of God, go we. [No apology to St. Augustine needed.]
